Stepping into your pets “shoes”

We all love our animals, at least I would like to believe that we do. I mean why else would we bring them into our lives and essentially adopt them?

Just like children, animals don’t have a voice or a choice on which family they end up with.  I once read a great saying and it has stuck with me…. “Your pet may be a small part of your life, but you are their WHOLE life!”   Wow, it is so true.   Your pet relies on you for everything, love, companionship, food, water, shelter, safety.

So lets role play for a minute, bare with me here. 🙂  Close your eyes, and put yourself in your mind in an empty room. Now, in this room you look down and discover you have paws. You look up and there is your human, arms out and picking you up. YAY, you have a new forever home (or you hope so).

Ok I am not going to make you role play an entire animals life. So I am going to pick 2 scenarios…. Scenario #1 – now you’re at your home & you are so excited, you want to play and snuggle and love. But you are being put into a cage that is not much bigger then your body. You are left in there for hours and hours, bored out of your mind, hearing all the fun things going on around you. Maybe you have to pee, maybe you are hungry, maybe your lonely & sad. You don’t have a way to communicate, other then bark or whine which gets you in trouble. You don’t have a way to entertain yourself, and all you want is for that human to love you & be around you.   Ok, I have to stop there as I am crying while I am typing this.

Do you see where I am going? I can’t even do a second scenario because the truth is, if you read that & truly put yourself into that & didn’t feel the sadness, then I don’t think a second scenario would change that.

Just so you know, the second scenario was an animal that just wants to do good, and be good, and be loved & adored but instead is the scapegoat for all the anger & frustration that goes in and in turn gets physically & emotionally hurt.  You can do this on your own if you want to or maybe I will be able to do it in a later post but for now I am getting worked up & I don’t want to.

Animals (pets) are a gift, they are the purest things we can bring into our lives.  They will not only be a great source of comfort with their unconditional love, but they are the greatest teachers in forgiveness!  Think about it, people can do unimaginable things to pets & they will still wag their tales or lick your face if you let them. WOW, the amount of pureness that takes is amazing.

So here is what I ask of you… please if you are going to get a pet know that it is a lifetime commitment (their lives, not yours as they don’t get to live as long as we do), it is not their choice to be with you so if you choose them give them the best.  They are not toys, or a temporary fix to an emotional problem. They are a spirit, a beacon of love & they deserve the best life we can give them.  IF you already have a pet, make the choice from this day forward to try to show them the same love they show you 🙂

PS – this is for all pets – dogs, cats, fish, horses, pigs, birds, snakes, ferrets, hedgehogs, chickens, turtles, lizards, and ANY other type of pet you have.  🙂
